On June 11th, The Diabetic Debrief hosted Insight on Diabetes, a virtual conference that brought together experts to explore the evolving landscape of diabetes care, advocacy, and research. The event highlighted how both systemic and personal factors—from language barriers to clinical bias—shape the experiences of people living with diabetes every day.
Humanizing Diabetes Care
Diabetes Nurse and Educator Gloria Yee opened the discussion by focusing on the human side of diabetes. Drawing from over 30 years of patient experience, Gloria reminded attendees that diabetes care doesn’t begin or end with medication—it’s deeply influenced by access to transportation, nutritious food, and mental health support.
She shared powerful stories of working with Cantonese- and Spanish-speaking patients in San Francisco, where translation and cultural understanding can make or break a treatment plan. Her message was clear: healthcare must meet people where they are, in the languages they speak, and within the communities they live.
Addressing Bias in Research
Endocrinologist and Diabetes Researcher Dr. Rebecca Pugliese followed with an illuminating presentation on biases in clinical research for Type 1 diabetes. She explained how studies often overrepresent white participants, leaving patients of color out of the data that shapes treatments and technologies.
Dr. Pugliese emphasized that this lack of representation has real consequences—when research fails to reflect the diversity of those living with diabetes, medicine fails to serve everyone equally. Her talk underscored the need for equity and inclusion not only in healthcare access, but in the scientific foundation that drives it.
Key Takeaways
Equity must be built into every level of care and research.
Language access and cultural understanding improve real-world outcomes.
Diversifying clinical trials ensures safer, more effective treatment for all.
Community voices and local advocacy remain central to change.
Looking Ahead
The Insight on Diabetes conference reaffirmed why conversations like these are essential. Diabetes care is not one-size-fits-all—and neither should the systems designed to support it be.
At The Diabetic Debrief, we’ll continue creating spaces where professionals and patients can share insight, challenge bias, and work toward a healthcare system that truly serves everyone living with diabetes.
